Welcome to Catholic Homes' Annual Report 2022 - 2023
Catholic Homes is a not-for-profit aged care provider that has responded to the needs of the Western Australian community for more than 50 years.
We are proud of our Christian heritage as we continue to serve older people whether it is in one of our Independent Living villages, Residential Care residences or in their own home as receiving our Home Care service.
Amidst the ever-evolving landscape of Catholic aged care, I reflect upon the transformative journey Catholic Homes has undertaken in the past 12 months as it continues to make Jesus Christ present through faith, practice and an embrace of Jesus’ teachings.
In the face of challenges and changes, Catholic Homes has steadfastly upheld its Christ-centered mission, offering solace, empowerment, human dignity, and hope to all those entrusted to its care.
Throughout the previous year, the elderly members of our community, who are among the most vulnerable, have been safeguarded from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This achievement is a testament to the unwavering dedication of the remarkable staff and volunteers at Catholic Homes, who have tirelessly worked to ensure the safety and well-being of their clients and residents.
Our people continue to demonstrate remarkable consistency, fostering an environment of positivity while embodying the essence of Jesus’ teachings in their interactions with clients and residents.

In attending to the emotional, spiritual and care needs of elderly people, we at Catholic Homes provide quality services with compassion, respect and dignity to all.
For more than 50 years Catholic Homes has advanced Catholic social teachings which reflect Gospel values that emphasise Christ-like joy, love and hospitality.
Joy springs from a deep connection with faith and for those who encounter Jesus in their hearts and lives, sharing this with family and friends.
Love, central to the healing ministry of Jesus Christ, encompasses compassion, sympathy, forgiveness, and selflessness, while promoting unity and understanding.
Hospitality, inspired by Christ’s example, extends an invitation with open arms to love thy neighbour as thy self and to share resources for the benefits of all with a preferential treatment for the poor.
These values underpin Catholic Homes’ mission that guides us to find meaning in our lives and our efforts to create a community of holistic care to the elderly.

This reporting year Catholic Homes continued to deliver its mission to provide quality and compassionate care to older people.
These past 12 months have been significant for the number of developments within the aged care sector that have had wide ranging impacts on the organisation’s operations.
I acknowledge the dedication and skill of our staff who together showed resilience and compassion during and when the COVID-19 situation in Western Australia thankfully began to turn in the latter part of 2022.
As the calendar year ended we saw the withdrawal of the government’s State of Emergency arrangements for Western Australia and an easing of restrictions for aged care.
Our residents, clients and their family members are commended for their sympathy and cooperation as we worked hard to keep people safe.
In 2022-2023 Catholic Homes responded to the many changes coming to us as a result of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety.

2023 marked a year of beginning and completing many projects. The ‘stand outs’ were the Catholic Homes’ Mission Framework, the continuous improvement of Pastoral Services and the opening event of Sister Mary Glowrey in Belmont.
The Catholic Homes’ Mission Framework
The Catholic Homes Mission Framework is a modern and effective organisational framework that will guide our growth and development as a Catholic aged care provider of choice. It was developed through extensive research, reading, and consultation. The Mission Framework makes explicit our Vision, Mission, Values, and Catholic Social Teaching.
The functional aspects in the framework are:
- Formation/cultural alignment.
- Commitment to continuous improvement.
- Collaboration
- Leadership
- Recruitment and development of personnel.
The framework will serve as a reference for designing and organising all workshops and formation events.

Rostering upgrade goes live
The improved Rostering system, Optima, including an automated time and attendance module, Bundy Plus and a smart phone application ‘LOOP’ goes live in July 2023.
Staff say farewell at Servite
Staff, managers and clergy who were there from the start gathered to bid a final farewell to our much-loved residence.
Fr Myles and Fr Ross of the Servite Order attended the event on Thursday 25 May.
McLeod Wing opens at Castledare
Our staff were outstanding in repurposing amenities to further deliver our mission so we may provide quality and compassionate care to older people.
Six comfy bedrooms were created around an attractive lounge and dining area in the new McLeod Wing at Castledare in Wilson.
Sad Goodbye to Servite
We consulted with staff, residents and families to prepare for the closure of the residence. All teams worked hard to keep people informed and to provide individual support and assistance.
Bunbury Accreditation Success
Teams chipped in and, with support from Head office, secured accreditation from the government regulator
Employee assistance
We undertook awareness sessions for our staff across our Sites on Catholic Homes’ Employee Assistance Program.
New Aged Care Code of Conduct
Catholic Homes responds to the Australian Government’s changes, providing additional staff training, complementing our existing arrangements.
Recognition program launched
To boost understanding and best practice, our ‘Care with Purpose’ recognition program was introduced to recognise high performing staff.
Altura training system implemented
A new online training system is introduced. Our goal is to continue to meet the Government’s Aged Care Quality Standards and deliver the best possible care and services to our residents and clients.
Safety focus a priority
We reviewed all our work, health and safety policies and procedures to ensure compliance with the new Workplace Health and Safety Act and Regulations for WA.
We trained staff including the executive and board in accident, incident and hazards reporting, and new responsibilities for stakeholders, as detailed in new Workplace Health and Safety legislation for WA.
A future workforce
To achieve our Strategic Plan and government staffing mandates, we reviewed our workforce needs. Our focus group modelled requirements before presenting final recommendations to the Executive and Board for consideration.
Castledare accreditation
One of our largest services receives three-year accreditation from the Age Care Quality and Safety Commission. A huge thanks goes to staff and management for this achievement.
Rostering Software Upgrade
Work to upgrade of our residential care Rostering System commences.
