New home honours pioneering female doctor
We are proud to announce that our newest nursing home is named Sister Mary Glowrey Residential Aged Care, to honour a pioneering female Australian doctor and medical nun.
Catholic Homes Chief Executive Paul Andrew said Dr Sr Mary Glowrey JMJ (1887-1957) dedicated her life to care. Graduating with bachelor’s degrees in medicine and surgery, she commenced as a doctor in hospitals in Melbourne and New Zealand.
“Her work is inspirational,” Mr Andrew said.
“As a champion of women’s and children’s needs, Sr Mary served as the inaugural president of the Catholic Women’s Social Guild.
“She studied further and worked as an ear, nose and throat specialist in Victoria, before answering a call to become a medical missionary with the congregation of the Society of Jesus Mary Joseph in Guntur, India.
“There she spent nearly 40 years in medical missionary work, providing care to thousands, training women in para-medical services, helping establish the St Joseph’s Hospital and founding the Catholic Health Association of India.”
Work to complete construction of the Sister Mary Glowrey residence in Belmont is progressing well, Mr Andrew said.
To help deliver this new residence, Catholic Homes has appointed experienced facility manager and registered nurse Wade Minett.
“Wade is working with executives Carey Bray and Donna Kelly on the building’s commissioning and then will continue at Sister Mary Glowrey as its Facility Manager when the service opens in later in 2023,” Mr Andrew said.
“Please join me in warmly welcoming Wade and our new residential care staff who have chosen to work with Catholic Homes.”
